The School of Environmental and Forest Sciences, a school within the College of the Environment, seeks a Full-time Senior Computing Specialist to support a vibrant and diverse academic community of more than 400 undergraduate students, 150 graduate students, 40 faculty and 300 staff.
The School of Environmental and Forest Sciences (SEFS) was established in 1907 as one of the first natural resource programs in the country. Computing resources at SEFS comprise a complex networked environment, including research, administrative and instructional applications, some of which are in off-campus locations. SEFS seeks an experienced systems administrator to serve as our computing resources and network manager. The primary role of this position is to manage the IT team of 2 computing support staff and ensure computing efficiency and integrity of the operating environment, which currently includes more than 500 devices and multiple servers with concurrent use of 150-200 users. In performing a wide variety of functions, this position will work closely with faculty and administrative representatives for academic input. The successful applicant must possess technical skill and be able to work patiently and productively with students, staff, and faculty spanning a range of computing expertise and with University of Washington IT to leverage institutional services for the benefit of SEFS. The candidate will interface proactively with the University of Washington’s centralized information technology resources to best serve the SEFS community.
The primary responsibility of the Systems Administrator is monitoring and enhancing the operating environment to ensure optimal performance and availability. Duties related to this responsibility include:
•Coordinate computer activities and resources within SEFS, providing technical support in the day-to-day operations of shared computing resources, (this person will not be expected to support desktops, but to work on the services these desktops rely on)

•Supervise the SEFS IT team, consisting of a Computer Services Consultant and a Computer Support Technician who provide front-line desktop support and systems analysis and implementation.
•Administration of Windows Domain systems, including groups, user, computer and service accounts
•Administration of VMware vSphere and Horizon
•Administration of print servers and queues, database servers, license servers
•Administration and maintenance of SEFS hosted physical and virtual servers.
•Administration of SEFS security systems including Windows updates, door lock infrastructure and security cameras
•Schedule repairs, monitor service requests, maintain records and service contracts
•Update and maintain various systems and software such as operating systems, security software systems, backup systems, local software utilities, and printing systems

Requirements:
•Bachelor’s degree in computer science, information technology or equivalent work experience
•At least 4 years of increasing responsibilities while delivering information technology services in a complex environment
•At least 2 years of experience delivering highly available services in a Windows Active Directory environment
•Must be flexible to monitor SEFS computing infrastructure and occasionally respond to network outages, scheduled installations and maintenance activities during off-hours
Expertise in the following:
•Administering a Windows network and domain
•Administration of VMware vSphere and Horizon
•Active Directory administration.
•Installing and maintaining Windows servers
•Windows server print management
•Strong interpersonal and communication skills
•Ability to work independently
•Ability to work creatively within given resources to provide best possible computing environment for students, staff and faculty
•Demonstrated ability to learn applicable computer system concepts and apply them in a user-oriented environment
•Demonstrated ability to communicate highly technical information to end-users in a service-oriented and understandable manner
•Demonstrated excellent oral and written communication skills
•Flexibility and adaptability to new and ever-changing requirements
•Interest in learning and executing how to transition SEFS IT services to cloud environments, where such changes are deemed suitable
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except where there are legal requirements such as license/certification/registration.
Desired:
•Microsoft Certified Solutions Associate (MCSA) or Microsoft Certified Solutions Expert (MCSE)
