Field Underwriter Trainee
Under direction and training of management, increase underwriting proficiency and performance of underwriting functions. Participate in on-the-job training to achieve necessary development and ability to assume additional duties and responsibilities.
Essential Functions:
- Physically inspect, analyze and evaluate property for value, condition and exposure purposes.
- Underwrite, renew, rate various lines of business (varies by state)
- Participate in various daily inspections, roof inspections, special projects inspection programs
- Frequently accompany Agents on insured appointment to assist in evaluating and identifying exposures
- Assume duties as Roving Fiend Underwriter to assist with daily and overflow inspection workload
- Learn duties and responsibilities of Field Underwriter through on-the-job training in office and in the field
- Depict findings in photography and complete reports of discovery from inspections
- Become well acquainted with underwriting manual
Additional Responsibilities:
- Attend various meetings, conferences and training seminars when and where requested
- Regular travel including overnight as required
- Must possess and maintain a valid Driver’s License and acceptable driving record
- Other duties and responsibilities as assigned
- Regular and predictable attendance is required

Education:
- Bachelor’s Degree (Majoring in Business, Agriculture, Insurance, Risk Management or related field (required in LA, MS, SC)
Or
- Combination of education and work-related experience AND Participation and completion of Insurance education (varies by state)

- Ability to represent the company with external constituents
- Proficient in English written and verbal communication skills
- Demonstrated time management and priority setting skills
- Maintains a high degree of professionalism
- Ability to build strong customer relationships
- Demonstrates excellent judgement and decision making skills
- Possesses strong technical aptitude
- Proficient PC Skills
Work Experience:
- Up to 3 years Underwriting or related insurance field experience (varies by state)
- Agricultural knowledge and/or experience (varies by state)
