The starting rate of pay for this position will be within 15% of the grade range minimum. The rate determined will depend on experience and qualifications.

  • Provide good customer service to both internal and external customers, maintain positive and effective working relationships with other City employees (especially members of his or her own team), and have regular and reliable attendance that is non-disruptive.
  • Locate water and sewer underground utilities using utility maps and sensitive electronic equipment.
  • Calculate distances to ensure exact locations; mark the location of utilities using locating equipment, paint and line tracers.
  • Respond to emergency situations to give information and directions to contractors, City employees, and the general public to prevent further damage and lessen health and safety hazards.
  • Use independent judgment in determining public health and safety risks on the job site.
  • Answer questions from customers in a pleasant manner.
  • Coordinate projects with other City departments, equipment suppliers, private contractors, citizens, and other government agencies to allow for productive projects.
  • Work with contractors to draw up jobs, locate new lines and assure proper placement of lines and compliance with established safety precautions.
  • Work with engineering department to resolve issues.
  • May provide supervision in the absence of the Water & Sewer Field Supervisors.
  • Work with other utility inspections and builders to develop materials lists for jobs.
  • Draw up plan drawings for field crews for installations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School diploma or GED and three years of related experience required. 
  • A minimum of twelve months of experience planning and overseeing the work of a water or sewer crew is also required.
  • Must possess a Commercial Driver's License and must be able to obtain a Class A with Tanker Endorsement.
  • Must obtain Arkansas Department of Health Grade 3 Water Distribution License, Arkansas Wastewater License Class 1, Confined Space License, Traffic Control, and Trench Safety and a Competent Person Certificate.
  • Effectively communicate with others orally and in writing.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. 
  • Ability to draw up plan drawings for field crews.  Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
  • Ability to solve practical problems. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Must be proficient in the use of a service truck, locator boxes, computers, and handheld radio.
  • Ability to read engineering plans and specifications on job sites.
  • While performing the functions of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. 
  • The employee regularly is required to stand, walk, and sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
  • The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. 
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
  • While performing the functions of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to wet/and or humid conditions, moving mechanical parts; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; outside weather conditions and risk of electrical shock.
